Introducing RSCM's Sing for the King!

Sing for the King is an open invitation for all choirs to join in song to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. Joanna Forbes L’Estrange, acclaimed singer and composer, has been commissioned by the RSCM to compose a new coronation anthem for this project: The Mountains Shall Bring Peace which is available now!

The anthem sets the words of the psalms and is suitable for both services and concerts. The anthem has moments of grandeur for larger choirs on formal occasions, while its accessible melodic sweep lends an intimacy that will be enjoyed by smaller groups and gatherings.

There are three versions of the music: SATB and organ, SATB and piano, and unison voices with piano. The accompaniments are interchangeable. Those not wishing to learn the full five-minute piece can still join in the project by learning the broad, hymn-like melody of the closing section, making it suitable for younger and/or less experienced singers to participate in a performance of the whole piece.

Joanna Forbes L'Estrange

‘I feel honoured to have been commissioned to write a piece to mark such an important moment in history and I am excited to hear choirs singing it. Being Welsh born, Irish on my mother’s side, Scottish on my father’s side and having lived most of my life in England I, like our King, feel a strong connection to all parts of Britain. When I came across the psalm verse “the mountains shall bring peace to the people” I was delighted because I’d been looking for a text which reflected King Charles’s love of the British countryside.’

‘I hope that choirs will enjoy singing my piece; do register your performance on the Sing for the King page on the RSCM’s website, where there are also links to get in touch with me directly. I’d love to hear from you.’
