Junior Millennium Youth Choir
The RSCM Junior Millennium Youth Choir (JMYC) is our newly-formed feeder-lane towards MYC for singers aged 9-16 singing treble or alto, offering the opportunity to learn from high-calibre choral directors and vocal coaches, sing fantastic music in inspiring buildings and meet other young singers from across the country. JMYC has a close relationship with its sibling groups, the Intermediate Millennium Youth Choir (iMYC) and Millennium Youth Choir (MYC), and JMYC members have a great opportunity to learn from, and with, the older singers when they take part in events together.
JMYC groups are gradually forming a network across the country, with single-day workshops and events taking place at regional level. Occasionally, JMYC groups join with other RSCM choirs to sing services in cathedrals or large parish churches.

Q. Who can apply?
A. Singers aged 9-16, singing treble or alto, are invited to apply. Singers undergo a short voice test during their first event to explore speed of learning, check their sense and control of pitch and consider their potential to benefit from belonging to the choir. This also provides a helpful baseline to measure their future achievements against. Membership of an RSCM-affiliated choir is encouraged, and if your child isn’t singing with one regularly, we would be delighted to put you in touch with a local choir trainer.
Q. How much does it cost, and is there any financial assistance available?
A. All JMYC events are priced individually. Single day events are £5 per child (2018/19) and the summer residential in Salisbury (2018) was £280.
Q. How does the programme of events work?
A. Regional JMYC groups hold several single day events per year. We are keen to avoid weekend pressures which might take choristers away from their own choirs on a Sunday, so many events fall in the half term breaks and gap after Easter. There will be occasional Saturday commitments when JMYC groups perform at major churches and cathedrals.
Q. My son’s voice is changing at the moment – can he still join?
A. JMYC is aimed at those singing treble or alto, and it is important that changing voices are supported in an environment that is tailored to their needs. Boys whose voices are changing will be encouraged to attend the Bath Course in August, or audition for iMYC. Both offer focussed guidance and training for changing voices, and support boys as they get used to singing in a new register.
Q. JMYC isn’t running in my area yet – how can I get involved?
A. JMYC is a new project, so there isn’t nationwide coverage yet. If there isn’t a group near you, please let us know that you’re interested and we will keep you up to date with future venues.
