RSCM Voices South
RSCM Voices South (VS) is an adult training choir, which sings approximately ten services per year in cathedrals and major churches across the South of England. Most events take place on Saturdays (or occasional Bank Holidays and full weekends) and singers come from across the region to rehearse before the service at the end of the day. The director is Rosemary Field, RSCM Deputy Director (Education, Voluntary Networks; Safeguarding).
Learning new repertoire and developing vocal and musical skills is at the heart of the choir’s work, so the music list for the year includes a wide range of styles and periods which present different challenges and teaching points. Two rehearsal days during the year focus on learning the music for forthcoming services and offer the opportunity for occasional small- group and individual work on musicianship and vocal skills.
Voices South has space to add another two or three proficient tenors and altos/contraltos to our competent and committed pool of singers in order to spread the load more evenly over the geography we cover.
Q. Who can apply?
A. Membership of VS is open to adult members of RSCM-affiliated churches and choirs, or Individual/Student members of the RSCM. Admission to the choir is by audition and singers who are working at about RSCM Silver Award level are likely to be at about the right standard to apply. All members must comply with RSCM good-conduct requirements.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. Standard membership - £28 (2019/20 academic year)
Second singer from the same household - £14 (2019/20 academic year)
Double choir membership (Voices South and Voices West) - £20 per choir
Singers are responsible for providing their own music. Bursary funding is occasionally available; please contact the choir administrator for further details.
Q. What happens at the audition?
A. As well as preparing a piece to sing (chosen from specific lists on the RSCM Silver Award syllabus), you will be asked to demonstrate some vocal exercises to test range and tone quality, and given some sight-singing to test your ability to tackle new music. You will also be asked to read a short passage of text to show your verbal facility, which will be so important in many things the choir sings.
Q. How do I apply to join?
A. New applicants should contact the choir administrators, James and Holly Kennard (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone the RSCM office (01722 424843). Auditions are usually held at rehearsal days, or at other VS/RSCM events.
