Editorial
There have been some exciting changes at
the RSCM since we last went to press. We are delighted to have welcomed our new Director, Hugh Morris, who has been in post since
1 August. In addition, we now warmly
welcome the Very Revd Dr John Hall, Dean
of Westminster, who has been appointed the RSCM’s new Chair of Council. Dr Hall was ordained in 1975 and has served parishes
in Kennington, Wimbledon and Streatham in the Diocese of Southwark. Amongst his many achievements, he was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England from 1984 until 1992, and from 1998 served as the Church of England’s Chief Education Officer. The RSCM is delighted that he has decided to accept the role of Chair and we wish him every success during his tenure.
In other news, many RSCM members will have noticed the arrival of our new website. Launched in late July, it has since attracted a great deal of praise, both for its easy to use interface and its more contemporary style. You can visit the site at www.rscm.org.uk. Do give it a try.

Turning our attention to the pages ahead,
the focus of this issue is the Armistice of 1918 and the death of Hubert Parry. Our first article provides a fascinating insight into the ways
in which Parry responded to the onset and progress of hostilities during the Great War.
This is followed by a consideration of the effects of rampant anti-German sentiments
on hymn choices in Salisbury cathedral and beyond. Then, in this quarter’s hymn mediation, we take a look at ‘Dear Lord and Father of mankind’ and consider both its musical worth and the somewhat surprising origin of its words.
Next, we provide fresh ideas to reinvigorate the season of Advent. And for those seeking practical help in their parish, we have top tips for recruiting musicians to a choir or worship band. Finally, we take a deeper look at the InHarmony report on the state of parish church music, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Archive of Recorded Church music, and we mark the retirement of Lord Gill, who stepped down as Chair of the RSCM Council in June.
