EPIPHANY FESTIVAL 2018

Ox ordshire appreciated the opportunity to sing with the cathedral choir in an Epiphany Festival. Over 100 a fliated singers took part, some
romas arafeldasGloucestershire, Hert ordshire, Middlesex and Wiltshire. Theyweredirected,asbeore,byDr Stephen Darlington, and accompanied by Makoto James (junior organ scholar). Dr Darlington, who retires later this year (see below), was able as usual
to weld a disparate gathering into
a reasonable choir.

In addition to the usual Epiphany hymns, we sang ‘Eastern monarchs, sages three’ (Tres Magi), ‘The sinless one to Jordan came’ (Solothurn) and ‘Jesus, come! orweinviteyou’(Nean er).The organ voluntaries were Bach’s Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel Hoch, BWV 769 andthePrelu ean FugueinD,BWV532.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR RSCM LEICESTERSHIRE
The Leicestershire Area has had a
di fcult ew years, but a new chair and committee are working hard to connect
with the churches o the Leicester Diocese and put together a programme o events or the coming year. We had a success ul and enjoyable choral estival at Leicester Cathedral in February, led by Chris Ouvry-Johns, and supported by the cathedral choir and a number
o church choirs rom around the area.
Our next event is a workshop called ‘Worship Music or All’, which will be held on Saturday 9 June and led by Miles Quick (RSCM Head o Congregational and Instrumental Music). This will be hosted by St Mary, Hinckley and will combine traditional and contemporary music. This event is open to musicians, singers and clergy, and will culminate in a service to include the music learnt during the workshop. There will be no charge or RSCM members; a ee o £5 will apply or non-members. For more

On Saturday 15 September, we welcome Andrew Moodie (RSCM South o England Regional Coordinator) to English Martyrs Academy in Leicester. He will be running a two-hour session on ‘Building your Voice or Worship’ using the Voice for Life programme.
We are also busy putting together aprogramme or2019,whichwill includeamorecontemporary estival andsomeencouragement orministry teams to explore how best to use music in worship. A BITTERSWEET SUMMER SCHOOL FOR RSCM SCOTLAND Thisyear,theRSCMScotlandSummer School will be held July 16–19 in Dunblane. Lunchesanddinnerswillbetakenat Old Churches House. Rehearsals and Workshops will be in the Cathedral Halls. Services will be in the splendid space that is Dunblane Cathedral.
But this year, the 21st Anniversary
o our Summer School, during our tea breaks, meals and evening socialising, we will be reminiscing about Gordon Appleton, who died suddenly on Easter
Sunday. Gordon initiated the Dunblane Singing Break and led it or f teen years. When it was decided to extend the scope o theSingingBreakandmakeita Summer School, Gordon was its frst Director. He handed over to Matthew Beetschen, who had worked closely
with Gordon and had accompanied the services every year. Gordon also travelled to Scotland every year to take charge o the Dunblane Singing Day in November.
In a way, the whole course this year willbededicatedtoour riend,Gordon, but we will be remembering him specifcally on Wednesday 18 July in our evening service, which will be a memorial to him. RSCM AUSTRALIAN SUMMER SCHOOL
This year the RSCM Summer School
was held at Dilworth School, Auckland, New Zealand where 75 people attended, two-thirdso whomhadcome rom Australia. We were treated to a week o choral singing, recitals and presentations, and took part in two services and

the Choristers at Winchester Cathedral, UK. Each day began with morning worship and ended with evening worship.
