SUNDAY 7 MAY
THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
In the Common Worship Lectionary the reading from Acts must be used as either the first or second reading. In the Revised Common Lectionary it may be used as the first reading.
COMMENT
Many worshippers in our congregations will hear this Gospel reading and be transported back to funerals
of family and friends. This passage, placed as it is in the season of Easter when we are celebrating Christ’s resurrection, immediately brings comfort and assurance, taking the sting out of death. Jesus urges his disciples to take heart, and to take their belief both in God and in his own words and deeds seriously. But above all, Jesus has now made clear what the final destiny of his followers is – to be with the Father
in him for ever.
HYMNS AND SONGS
A mighty stronghold is our God
All my days I will sing this song of gladness
All the way my Saviour leads me
Alleluia, alleluia, Jesus, risen Lord of life
An upper room did our Lord prepare Christ is made the sure foundation Christ is our corner-stone
Christ is the world’s light
Church of God, elect and glorious (RL) Come, my way, my truth, my life Father, I place into your hands
Forth in the peace of Christ
Good Christians all, rejoice and sing How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
I am the light whose brightness shines I was so lost, but you showed the way Jesu(s), lover of my soul
Light of the minds that know him Light’s glittering morn(ing)
Love’s redeeming work is done My hope is built on nothing less
O sacred head
O saving victim, opening wide
Open your ears, O Christian people
Out of darkness God has called us
Rock of ages, cleft for me
Stephen, first of Christian martyrs
Take and eat
The church’s one foundation
Through all the changing scenes of life
Thy hand, O God, has guided
To God be the glory
When we are living, we are in the Lord
Ye that know the Lord is gracious
You are my anchor
You are the vine and we are the branches
