SUNDAY 21 MAY
THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION DAY)
In the Common Worship Lectionary the reading from Acts must be used as either the first or second reading. In the Revised Common Lectionary it may be used as the first reading.
COMMENT
This is the only time in all four Gospels when an evangelist presents his readers with the content of a very long prayer spoken by Jesus. Just how much of this can the reader take as historically reliable? John may well have composed
the prayer using his knowledge of Jesus’ life, as well as an author’s God-given imagination. This great prayer of Chapter 17 echoes much of what has become known throughout Christendom as ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.
HYMNS AND SONGS
All hail the power of Jesu’s name All over the world
Alleluia, sing to Jesus
As we bring our songs of love today Ascended Christ, who gained
Be glorified ... in the heavens
Be still and know that I am with you
Because the Saviour prayed
Christ is made the sure foundation
Christ is the king! O friends rejoice
Clap your hands, all you nations
Come now, O prince of peace
Come, let us join our cheerful songs
Come, see the Lord
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you
God is love, his the care
Hail the day that sees him rise Hail, thou once despised Jesus Holy forever and ever is God Holy Spirit, come, confirm us Holy Spirit, Lord of light
In my life, Lord, be glorified
Jesus shall reign
Jesus, stand among us
Look, you/ye saints, the sight is glorious
Lord of all hopefulness
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour
Lord, may we see your hands and side Lord, we come in your name
My Jesus, my Saviour
Name of all majesty
O church arise, and put your armour on
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray
One is the body and one is the Head
Rejoice, the Lord is King
The head that once was crowned with thorns
We are marching in the light of God
