THURSDAY 6 APRIL
MAUNDY THURSDAY (THE EUCHARIST OF THE LAST SUPPER)
COMMENT
The traditional roles are reversed here in Jesus’ tender act of love. The master becomes the servant by washing the disciples’ feet. Jesus suggests that this reversal of roles should characterize the lives of
all his followers. This is the way to true happiness. If the disciples are content to accept the fact that they are not above their master, they will accept this humble destiny. What is more, Jesus makes it quite clear that our love and respect for each other is not an option, but a command by which we will be recognized as the followers of Jesus.
HYMNS AND SONGS
According to thy gracious word
All the room was hushed and still
An upper room did our Lord prepare
At the Lamb’s high feast we sing
At this table we remember
Blessed are you who made the universe
Bread is blessed and broken
Brother, sister, let me serve you
Draw nigh and take the body of the Lord
Faith, hope and love
From heaven you came
God is love, and where true love is
Godhead here in hiding
Great God, your love has called us here
He gave his life in selfless love
Heaven shall not wait
How can I repay the Lord
I come with joy
Jesus in the olive grove
Jesus, in dark Gethsemane
Lay down your head, Lord Jesus Christ
Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us
Lord, how can I repay all you ever give
Love is his word, love is his way
My God, and is thy table spread
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray
Of the glorious body/Now, my tongue
On that dark night
Prepare a room for me
Stay with me, remain here with me
The heavenly word, proceeding forth
The time was early evening
There’s no banquet so rich
This is the night, dear friends
We come as guests invited
You are the vine and we are the branches
