FRIDAY 7 APRIL
GOOD FRIDAY
COMMENT
Here we are, five days on from Palm Sunday when we listened to the Passion Gospel reading according to Matthew. Each day our scriptural microscope has looked more closely at different events leading up to this momentous day, and now it is time
to stand back and experience once more the complete Passion according to John. In this reading, John makes it clear that this was a divine action, even though that action could encompass human and even sinful action within it. We see Jesus the ‘victim’ as the initiator, almost the author and actor of the whole historical drama. On this day we can do no more than stand near the cross, like the three Marys.
HYMNS AND SONGS
A purple robe, a crown of thorn
A time to watch, a time to pray
Above all powers, above all kings
Ah, holy Jesu(s), how hast thou offended
As royal banners are unfurled
At the cross her station/vigil keeping
Beneath the cross of Jesus (Getty)
Blessed assurance
Come and see, come and see
Drop, drop, slow tears
Faithful cross, above all other
Father of heaven, whose love profound
From heaven you came
Glory be to Jesus
He was pierced for our transgressions
Here hangs a man discarded
Here is love, vast as the ocean
How deep the Father’s love
In Christ alone
It is a thing most wonderful
Jesus Christ, I think upon your sacrifice
My Lord, what love is this
My song is love unknown
O changeless Christ
O come and mourn with me awhile O cross of Christ, immortal tree
O dearest Lord, thy sacred head
O sacred head
O(h), to see the dawn
See, Christ was wounded for our sake Sing, my tongue
The royal banners forward go There is a green hill far away
This is your coronation
We sing the praise of him who died Were you there
When I survey the wondrous cross With a prayer you fed the hungry
