THE SEASON OF EASTER
EASTERTIDE
COMMENT
The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide covers the period between Easter Day and Pentecost, 50 days later, and we first encounter it in the early
3rd century, when it is mentioned by Tertullian. It was connected to the Jewish Festival of Weeks (Shabuoth, see Leviticus 23.15), which was a 50-day harvest celebration period culminating in the day of Pentecost (see Acts 2.1). While the early church observed the gap between Passover and Pentecost as a period of rejoicing in the risen Christ, other traditions of an Easter Octave (an eight-day period also found in the Book of Common Prayer) and days surrounding Ascension Day have intervened. Common Worship has restored an emphasis on the 50-day ‘Eastertide’ period, within which one may even refer to ‘Ascensiontide’, encompassing Ascension Day and the Sunday following. In the Roman Catholic Church a recent translation of Ascension Day to the following Sunday has been tried, but now reversed. The Easter candle remains for the period, lit at each service until Pentecost, and Alleluias abound. While the Book of Common Prayer suggests the Easter Anthems should be used for the Octave, Common Worship use implies that they may be said or sung for the whole period.
Common Worship provides various seasonal material: see Common Worship: Times and Seasons (Church House Publishing, 2006, pages 426–502, or follow the ‘Prayer and Worship’ links on the Church of England’s website, www.churchofengland.org), which includes Ascension and Pentecost content. After a good selection of invitations, confessions, absolutions, prayers, acclamations, prefaces and dismissals comes an innovative ‘Stations of the Resurrection’ (pages 443–468), an idea with possible Spanish origins which traces a journey through the various resurrection appearances recorded in the Gospels and Acts. For a service exploring this see Issue 95, pages 6–7. New Patterns for Worship
(Church House Publishing, 2002) also provides a seasonal Service of the Word (pages 402–406).
