SUNDAY 23 APRIL
THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
In the Common Worship Lectionary the reading from Acts must be used as either the first or second reading. In the Revised Common Lectionary it may be used as the first reading.
COMMENT
Luke tells of an early resurrection appearance
of Jesus that is exclusive to his Gospel. It is a story held closely in the hearts and minds of worshippers, especially at a Eucharist. It is a compelling account, realistic and very human in its attention to detail. The two travellers are often described as ‘disciples’, but they could not have been part of the twelve, because when they returned to Jerusalem they found the eleven together (Judas, of course, had gone). Having invited Jesus to stay and eat with them, the two friends suddenly recognized him by the way he broke the bread. Had they seen him do that before? Not at the Last Supper, unless more than the
twelve were there!
HYMNS AND SONGS
Abide with me
As we are gathered, Jesus is here
*Before the throne of God above
Broken for me, broken for you
Brother, sister, let me serve you
**Christ be in my waking
Christ is the king! O friends rejoice
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you
Fear not, rejoice and be glad
Glorious things of thee/you are spoken
How can I repay the Lord
I danced in the morning
I want to walk with Jesus Christ
Jesus, stand among us
Light of the minds that know him
Lord, how can I repay all you ever give
My heart is filled with thankfulness
New songs of celebration render
O Christ, the great foundation
O for a closer walk with God (Getty/Townend)
O thou who this mysterious bread Oh, how could it be
On the journey to Emmaus Rejoice, the Lord is King
Spirit of the living God
Thanks be to God whose love
The love of God comes close
The strife is o’er
The time was early evening
There’s no banquet so rich
Thine be the glory
This joyful Eastertide
We have a gospel to proclaim
When we walk with the Lord
Word that formed creation
Ye choirs of new Jerusalem
