SUNDAY 4 JUNE
TRINITY SUNDAY/THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
COMMENT
Matthew 28.16–20 (CW/RCL): The final paragraph of Matthew begins to prepare for the work of the church and neatly sorts out some remaining loose ends. Jesus had promised to go before the disciples to Galilee, and here he is with the eleven on a Galilean mountain top. Matthew, throughout his Gospel, has always hinted that the Gentiles were to be a part of the greater story, and Jesus now commands the disciples to go to all nations to teach and baptize. And always there is that comforting knowledge that Jesus will be with them, and with us too.
John 3.16–18 (RL): Another ‘golden verse’ today that is etched into our faith memories: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son’. This is the good news – God loved all there was, and gave all he had. The objective of this overwhelming love is to offer everlasting life to women and men everywhere. The challenge, of course, is whether in response to this act of love people will embrace the life that is offered, or perish.
