THURSDAY 8 JUNE/SUNDAY 11 JUNE
CORPUS CHRISTI/THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
In the Common Worship Lectionary, the Day of Thanksgiving for the Institution of the Holy Communion (traditionally known as Corpus Christi) is observed on Thursday 8 June. Those using the Roman Lectionary observe Corpus Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ) on Sunday 11 June. Further musical suggestions can be found on the RSCM website (www.rscm.org.uk/our-resources/liturgy-worship/planning-worship/).
COMMENT
‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ Humanly speaking, this question is very understandable. It has been the subject of debate by theologians over many centuries in the Christian Church, and it still remains a cause of division. The debate itself could well be seen as
a barrier to coming to Jesus if the object is to find a human rational answer to the question. Of course, when Jesus saw the Jews in dispute over it, he did not make it any easier. He reasserted the fact that our life depends on eating his flesh, and then, to make matters more difficult, he added, and drinking his blood.
