SUNDAY 11 JUNE
BARNABAS THE APOSTLE
For those celebrating Corpus Christi, see pages 40 and 41. For those observing the First Sunday after Trinity, see pages 44 and 45.
COMMENT
Barnabas is known as a great encourager of his fellow Christians and it is fitting that the Gospel reading for the day is concerned with our love for one another. For the Christian, love has to be cross-shaped. The love that is fundamental to the life of God’s people is not only vertical, flowing downwards and upwards from Father to Son to disciples, but it is horizontal as well. It must flow between and among Jesus’ disciples. So vital is this to our life together that it is an imperative, and is the foundation of all service.
HYMNS AND SONGS
All praise to our redeeming Lord
All the room was hushed and still
Brother, sister, let me serve you
Celtic Alleluia (Give thanks to the Lord)
Come, thou Holy Spirit, come
Filled with the Spirit’s power, with one accord
For all the saints who showed your love
For the fruits of his/all creation God is love, his the care
God is love, let heaven adore him God the Father of creation
God the Father, name we treasure
How shall they hear the word of God
I vow to thee, my country
In Christ there is no east or west
Jesus, we have heard your Spirit
Let there be love shared among us
Let us build a house
Lord, thy/your church on earth is seeking
Lord, you give the great commission Make me a channel of your peace May we, O Holy Spirit, bear your fruit One bread we break
Praise to the holiest in the height Saints of God! Lo, Jesu’s people Sing for God’s glory
Spread, O spread, thou mighty word The kingdom is upon you
The love of God comes close
The son of consolation
*The Spirit lives to set us free
Thou God of truth and love
To you, O Christ, the Prince of Peace What shall our greeting be
Who are these, like stars appearing
You are the vine and we are the branches
*For a hymn workshop on ‘The Spirit lives to set us free’, see SbyS 83, pages 6–8.
