Skills in focus: RSCM Youth Choir in Salisbury
The RSCM’s flagship Youth Choir have recently been in Salisbury for four days of skills-based training, development, and liturgical singing.
“Bringing together young people from a wide age range […] to sing challenging sacred music with a strong connection to faith” – Youth Choir member (April 2025)
Led by Youth Choir Director Adrian Lucas, the singers were able to delve into new and challenging repertoire in preparation for a Choral Evensong in Salisbury Cathedral and a live recording session in the Sarum College Chapel.
“I really enjoy how everybody is so friendly and welcoming and the music standard is so high” – Youth Choir member (April 2025)
The Youth Choir also engaged in several Skills Sessions, focusing on different aspects of personal and collective development in church music delivered by visiting professional musicians and practitioners. There were also opportunities for reflection, leadership development, and fellowship—key components of the RSCM’s Education Strategy.
“Looking at running rehearsals is something I can see myself needing to learn how to do. Both these sessions helped me gather insight into this” – Youth Choir member (April 2025)
The RSCM Youth Choir is an exciting chamber choir for young singers aged 16 to 23. The choir meets for short residencies, usually twice a year (Easter and summer), at least one of which is based at a UK cathedral. The choir sings music of all styles and periods, from plainchant and the music of the Renaissance masters to Herbert Howells, contemporary compositions and brand new works.
Individual musical and vocal tuition is a key feature of courses and events, with opportunities for the choir to record and broadcast, and for members to develop leadership skills essential to their future. The Youth Choir offers a fantastic opportunity for young singers to engage at the highest standards with an exciting range of sacred choral music in worship.
