Stainer’s Crucifixion performance at St Marylebone, using the RSCM’s new critical edition

St Marylebone Parish Church was the venue of the first ever performance of Stainer’s masterpiece, The Crucifixion. It has been performed there every year since, usually on Good Friday, and this year, the choir will be singing from the RSCM’s New Critical Edition, edited by Professor Jeremy Dibble.

Date and time: 7 April 2023, 18:30

Bertie Bagent, Director of Music, at St Marylebone is looking forward to using the new edition:  ‘This is an exciting and important addition to RSCM’s catalogue.  Authoritatively edited, clearly laid out, and handsomely presented, this volume is ideal for every choir performing this classic work.’

St Marylebone will also be the venue of the RSCM Annual Lecture and Come and Sing Workshop in May. The RSCM’s annual lecture, this year given by Professor Jeremy Dibble, will be hosted by St Marylebone Church (the site of the The Crucifixion’s first performance) on 27 May at 4pm. Professor Dibble will deliver what is sure to be a fascinating lecture on the RSCM’s new critical edition of Stainer’s classic and provide insight into his research.

Prior to the lecture, you are invited to join us from 1pm for the unique opportunity to take part in a Come and Sing workshop to learn, rehearse, and perform the piece. A copy of the RSCM’s new critical edition will be included in your ticket price. After the lecture you are invited to perform alongside the professional choir and organist in the church. It promises to be an enlightening and captivating day of learning, music and connection.
