Update from the Scottish Government (2 July 2020)
The Scottish Government responded to the letter to which RSCM was a signatory with a detailed reply which includes the following encouraging sections:
“The Scottish Government looks forward to the time when choral singing can resume – but only when we can be sure it is safe to do so. Suppressing the virus and saving lives remains the top priority. We will continue to take advice on the risks presented by singing in transmission of the virus, and will base our decisions and guidance on that advice.
Work is underway on the sector-led development of guidance for the Performing Arts and Venues in Scotland. This will encompass choirs and singing in many different settings. It will be overarching in nature; as each organisation or workplace is different, it is for individual organisations to work with trade union, workforce or volunteer representatives to determine how best to apply any guidance in their particular circumstances. The Performing Arts and Venues guidance is scheduled for publication in July.
I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that the Scottish Government’s commitment to the performing arts sector and to choirs and choral groups across Scotland remains strong, and we are doing all we can to support it at this very challenging time.”
