RSCM Carols hit the airwaves

RSCM carols are featuring in a number of broadcasts over the Christmas period.

On Thursday 22 December at 2.30 pm, the BBC Singers, conducted by Sofi Jeannin, will feature two RSCM Carols: Bryan Kelly’s beautiful setting of ‘This lovely lady’, and Thomas Hewitt Jones’s wonderfully jolly setting of ‘The Holly and the Ivy’.

Thomas Hewitt Jones also featured in the BBC Radio 3 Afternoon Concert on Monday 19th December at 2.30. The concert was based around the six finalists in this year’s BBC Radio 3 Breakfast Carol Competition. The carols had been arranged by RSCM composer Joanna Forbes L’Estrange and her husband Alexander. Thomas’s ‘Carol of the Shepherds’ was performed by the BBC Singers, conducted by Bob Chilcott.

Classic FM has featured ‘Christmas Lullaby’ by Thomas Hewitt Jones in Smooth Classics with Margherita Taylor and is on their playlist so you might hear it over the Christmas period.

BBC Radio 3 Choral Evensong on 28 December at 4pm from Croydon Minster includes Martin How’s ‘Lullaby’, a setting of the Cradle Song by Isaac Watts. Martin spent most of his working life at the RSCM. He sadly passed away earlier this year.

Finally, On Christmas Night, on BBC 1 TV at 11.15pm, features David Ogden’s Love came down at Christmas, performed by the Exultate Singers, conducted by the composer.
