Wake-up call: wide-ranging results of the Church Musicians’ Fees Survey now available

Following the large response to the survey conducted in the Autumn, the RSCM has released both a summary of the results available to all HERE and has revised its more detailed Church Musicians Fees Guidance which is available to members.

In addition to renumeration, the survey gathered information about types of music taking place and musical roles (including those that are voluntary), congregation sizes and the use of technology and recorded music.

As commented on in the Church Times today, the survey has also revealed that two-thirds of church choirs have no members under 18 — a figure that rises to 80 per cent in villages and rural areas which Paul Hedley, RSCM Deputy Director, has described as a big potential wake-up call for the whole sector of youth involvement in church music. The RSCM’s core mission is to enable the flourishing of church music. As well as our existing educational programmes and resources, including courses, Voice for Life® and Hymnpact!®, we are about to bring in a new initiative to encourage children’s and young people’s participation: focused on a toolkit for material specifically around resources for developing junior choirs and young voices. This will be launched at our Online Support Event on 2nd April.
